How to build a habit without relying only on motivation
Choose a small action, connect it to a specific moment in your day and record when you do it. Start with a version that fits your routine. When you miss it, review the plan and resume at the next opportunity.
1. Choose an observable action
“Read two pages after breakfast” is easier to carry out and check than “become a better person”. Choose something you are responsible for and can clearly recognize as done.
2. Prepare a minimum version
Decide on the smallest useful version of your action for a difficult day, such as reading for five minutes. It does not have to be your final goal; it makes starting feasible.
3. Decide when and where
Connect the action to a time or a predictable event. Prepare the book or equipment beforehand. This reduces the number of decisions you need to make when it is time to act.
4. Record and adjust
Mark what you completed and review what made previous days difficult. A record is information for adjusting a plan, not a measure of personal worth.
What if I miss a day?
Resume at the next planned opportunity. If you keep postponing the action, reduce its size or change its time. No universal number of days guarantees that every action will become a habit.
